Hope for Heating Bills

WASHINGTON—Heating bills are expected to be lower this year than last. This is good news for everyone, but particularly for those who use natural gas to heat their homes.

The Energy Information Administration (EIA) says that the upcoming winter is expected to be milder. This, combined with lower fuel costs, will decrease the average home heating cost by 8 percent from last year.

Natural gas is used in almost 58 million homes in America. Midwesterners, of whom seven out of ten use natural gas for heat, could see the most benefit. These households will save about $105 on their heating bills this year compared with last year. Propane users could save as much as $280 this year. People who heat their homes with electricity or fuel oils will only see a $20-$60 reduction.

While this decrease is expected, the EIA still cautions households that actual costs will depend on local weather, the size and energy efficiency of the home, and the efficiency of furnaces and other heating equipment.

Overall, however, the outlook is positive for consumers who already struggle from the economic downturn and worry about keeping their jobs and paying their bills.

Think About This:

• How does your family save on your heating bill?

• What are some other responsible ways families can reduce costs this year?

• How can we care for those who have no heat this winter?
