February 24, 2004 Another "War on Terror" Success TRIPOLI, Libya— So far, it looks like Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi is keeping his word. He is working with U.S. officials and scientists to end his nation's development of WMDs (weapons of mass destruction). "The world can see that Col. Gadhafi is keeping his commitment," says White House spokesman Scott McClellan. In December, Mr. Gadhafi first announced his intentions to rid Libya of its nuclear and chemical weapons programs. He wants his new policy to lead to the lifting of longstanding U.S. sanctions against his nation. Libya is on America's list of nations that support terrorism. U.S. officials will be looking for evidence that Libya is moving to change that as well. Around 55,000 pounds of nuclear materials and missile parts have already been shipped from Libya to the United States. And Libya has begun destroying chemical weapons. That's "only the beginning," says Mr. McClellan. Congressman Tom Lantos of California was part of a Congressional delegation that met with Col. Gadhafi last month. He is urging President Bush to end the current ban on travel to Libya. If all goes well, the U.S. ban on trade with Libya could also eventually be lifted. — TOP STORY #19 |
