Questions

How does Christianity allow for more personal freedom than Islam?

If a society is free, what, if anything, restrains lawlessness and chaos?

What are the roles of government and religion in a society?

Many Muslims think that government ought to enforce Islamic law. Even those who reject Islam, they believe, should be legally required to follow its teachings.

That may sound a bit extreme. Actually, it is a position that makes sense within the religion of Islam.

Muslims reject the idea that people can be saved through the work of Jesus Christ. The Koran says instead that humans must save themselves by their own good deeds.

This belief makes it difficult for freedom to take root in an Islamic nation. If people earn salvation through a certain kind of behavior, why shouldn't rulers require that behavior of all people?

Compare this thinking to the Christian ideas in which other democracies are rooted. The founders of the United States, for example, believed that the role of government is limited. They understood that civil rulers do not have the duty or the power to accomplish salvation.

Scripture teaches that the Holy Spirit changes hearts. God works through the actions of his followers, the Christian church. It is by speaking the truth and showing Christ's love to others that we persuade unbelievers.
